Dr Nipu (Irandi) Jayatilleke is a specialist breast oncoplastic, thyroid, and general surgeon.
As a specialist surgeon, Nipu views the surgical procedure itself as just one small part of the patient’s journey. She finds that getting to know her patients as individuals enables her to better appreciate what they and their loved ones are going through. When a patient’s concerns are truly heard, their doctor is able to respond to them meaningfully and effectively.
This one-on-one interaction with her patients is what Nipu enjoys most about being a doctor. She understands that clear communication with the patient (and keeping in touch with their GP) is a vital part of giving patients the expert support they need at a challenging time.
Nipu is passionate about educating the next generation of doctors. She is a clinical tutor in Surgery at The University of Sydney, where she herself completed both her degrees: Medical Science, and postgraduate Medicine, from which she graduated with honours.
Having gained Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Nipu is actively involved within the college, where she advocates for continued excellence and progressive change within the profession.
Nipu undertook her surgical subspecialty training in Breast Oncoplastic Surgery, and Thyroid/ Parathyroid Surgery, at The Waikato Hospital in New Zealand, and the Breast Cancer Institute at Westmead Hospital. She is now a VMO at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, St. Luke’s Private Hospital, and Waratah Private Hospital.
