Professor Young is a Colorectal Surgeon and Head of the Department of Colorectal Surgery at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He is a member of the Training Board in Colon and Rectal Surgery and the RACS Board of Surgical Research. He is past Chairman of the RACS Board In General Surgery. He operates at RPA and Concord Hospitals.

Professor Young’s interests include surgical education and decision making. His interests as a colorectal surgeon include the management of large bowel obstruction using colonic stent insertion, and the management of rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and pelvic floor dysfuction. His specialty training to be a colorectal surgeon included fellowships in Sydney, Australia at RPA and Concord Hospitals, at Royal Adelaide Hospital, and at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA.

His 2013 book ‘Examination Surgery’ is an indispensable study guide to help surgical trainees prepare and perform for their fellowship exam. His collaborative research has been recognised of late, being awarded The Southern California Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Award for the Best Clinical Poster Presentation at the 2013 ASCRS Annual Meeting for the poster ‘Improving Quality of Life for People with Incurable Large Bowel Obstruction: RCT of Colonic Stent Insertion’, the 2014 Noel Newton Prize, Awarded for the Best Paper presented at the GSA ASM by a General Surgery Trainee for the presentation ‘Attitudes, Satisfaction and Risk of Attrition in Australian and New Zealand’, and The 2014 CICD/ISDS Prize, Awarded to the best original scientific paper presented in the area of Gastrointestinal Surgery, awarded at the GSA ASM, ‘The effect of laparotomy on the peritoneum and the impact of CO2 on peritoneal inflammation: a randomized controlled trial.’
