Five years changing the face of cancer | Chris O'Brien Lifehouse
 In Lifehouse News

We are excited to be celebrating our fifth anniversary of delivering cancer care to patients in November this year.

We’re planning a variety of activities to highlight how we are changing the face of cancer through research, pioneering new treatments and our unwavering focus on the wellbeing of patients and their carers.

The journey

We’ve come a long way since we first opened our doors to outpatients on 19 November 2013.

Lifehouse is a cancer hospital with a difference. Our services are housed in an award-winning building that offers everything a cancer patient needs under the one roof: from surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, screening and prevention to wellness through holistic care and complementary and alternative therapies like acupuncture, massage and reflexology.

We are a major referral hospital for rare, complex and advanced cancers in all tumour streams. We have the greatest number of cancer clinical trials in New South Wales. And we have one of the most advanced surgical robots in the world for less-invasive surgery – the dual console da Vinci© Xi.

We treat the body, mind and spirit, we conduct cancer research and we teach the next generation.

We’re the first facility of our kind in New South Wales. We are not-for-profit.

Perhaps because the road to get here wasn’t always smooth, we’re very proud of these achievements.

Lifehouse started with a vision, Chris O’Brien’s dream to improve the experience of cancer patients by creating an environment of discovery, research and excellent patient care, all under one roof.

To turn this vision into reality has required the commitment, determination, persistence, passion and courage of many incredible people – and a conviction that we will succeed – no matter what obstacles are put in our way.

A week of activities

To celebrate these achievements, we’re planning a week of activities from 5 to 9 November designed to engage with and show our gratitude to all the contributors to our success so far including researchers, clinicians, patients, volunteers, donors and the community.

Open House

We’ll kick the week off on Monday 5 November with Open House, where we open our doors to the community. We’ll take you behind the scenes and show you what goes on in theatres and radiation oncology, we’ll have educational stalls, a wide range of entertainment, food and activities. The LivingRoom will offer free complementary therapies like reflexology, massage and acupuncture.

Throughout the week, we’ll be running a series of TEDx-style talks on the latest in cancer treatment, research, innovation and wellness. Come and find out how the face of cancer is changing and how our clinicians and practitioners are at the forefront of these changes.

Everyone is welcome

Come and experience the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse difference during our celebration week. As well as the Open Day and the ChrisChats, you will be able to walk through a timeline of our achievements and a showcase of our research outcomes.

More detail to follow. We hope to see you here!
