We’re proud to announce that our very own Specialist Gynaecological Cancer Nurse, Shannon Philp, has won Nurse of the Year in the 2021 HESTA Nursing and Midwifery Awards.
Shannon is Australia’s first and only Gynaecological Cancer Nurse Practitioner, with 25 years of experience and education. Shannon accompanies her patients on every step of their cancer path, from screening and prevention, to diagnosis and onwards. As a Nurse Practitioner, she can prescribe treatment, order and interpret tests and refer patients, saving them a visit to the GP.
She has also led the development of services such as a colposcopy clinic and sexual intimacy counselling service to support patients through the psychological, physical, emotional and social challenges of gynaecological cancer.
“I’m honoured to receive this award,” Shannon says. “Like my cancer nursing colleagues, I do not do my job for recognition, but I really value and appreciate being recognised for improving patient care and outcomes, particularly for women with gynaecological cancer.”
At Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, many specialist nursing positions like Shannon’s are funded through the support of our donors. These positions are vital to improving the care and outcomes of our patients, and we are so grateful to our donors for making these positions possible.
