Associate Professor Ruta Gupta is a staff specialist in the Department of Tissue Pathology and Diagnostic Oncology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. She also holds appointments as a Clinical Associate Professor, Sydney Medical School, The University of Sydney and as a visiting scientist at The Kinghorn Cancer Centre. In addition to her training in anatomic pathology she has also worked as a Fellow at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in the USA.
A/Prof Gupta is the lead pathologist with the Head and Neck Oncology and Thyroid Multidisciplinary team at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse Cancer Centre/ Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. In this role, she reviews numerous biopsies from patients with head and neck lesions and performs histopathologic analysis of the surgically resected lesions. Pathology requires microscopic examination of tissue samples and is critical in delivering the best outcomes for patients. Accurate diagnosis must precede any treatment planning and thus review of the original biopsy material by a pathologist specialised in Head and Neck cancer, along with discussion at a multidisciplinary meeting is an important first step in patient care. After surgery, the cancer specimens must undergo detailed pathological examination by a pathologist skilled in the complex anatomy and diverse pathology of the head and neck region to determine the completeness of surgical treatment and to indicate where further surgery, radiotherapy or other forms of adjuvant treatment are needed.
A/Prof Gupta’s research is directed towards identifying morphologic characteristics and analysing ancillary immunohistochemical and molecular techniques that improve the diagnostic accuracy in head and neck cancers. She is also involved in evaluation of various biomarkers that improve prognostication and provide information about therapeutic targets for head and neck cancer patients. Her research interests have generated numerous, widely cited, peer reviewed publications in leading international journals.
A/Prof Gupta is actively involved in various education activities for pathology and ENT trainees and is the co-founder of the head and neck multidisciplinary and multi-institutional education programme at the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse Cancer Centre/ Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. She is also the convenor of the head and neck pathology companion club meetings for the International Academy of Pathology Australasian division and has been an invited speaker at numerous pathology and head and neck conferences.
