“It makes me feel happy and content to have left a gift in my Will, knowing first hand the very good treatment, care and support patients receive at Lifehouse.”

Luise de Longueville, Lifehouse Bequestor

Wording for your will

Your Will is your opportunity to leave a lasting legacy.

While your Will thoughtfully bequeaths your estate to the people you love, your Will can also benefit people you may never even meet – people such as researchers, patients, medical and surgical teams.

A gift to Chris O’Brien Lifehouse in your Will makes a significant and meaningful contribution to our work in creating a brighter future for people living with cancer.

When it comes to your Will, we always recommend first looking after your loved ones, and then leaving what’s left to Lifehouse to support our work in transforming cancer treatment and care.

After providing for family and friends and ensuring all debts have been paid, you can bequeath the remainder of your estate. The appropriate wording is:

I give, devise and bequeath the rest and residue of my estate remaining, free of all duties for the general purposes of Lifehouse Australia Trust ABN 70 388 962 804 of registered office Level 5, 119-143 Missenden Road, Camperdown, New South Wales 2050 and declare that the receipt of the Treasurer or other authorised officer shall be sufficient discharge for my executor.

If you wish, you can specify how your Bequest will be used or you can leave it to Lifehouse to determine where your Bequest is most needed within Lifehouse. To assist you and your solicitor we have provided examples below of appropriate wording, including the correct legal name should you wish to make a Bequest to Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.

The bequest officer at Lifehouse would be pleased to assist you or your solicitor with your bequest plans and would welcome your call on (02) 8514 0626 or email: Goldia.Shum@lh.org.au

It is a good idea to specify a proportion rather than an actual amount as it is very difficult to predict what your estate will be worth in the future or how much you will need for yourself or your dependents in the meantime. The appropriate wording for a percentage gift is:

I give, devise and bequeath ___________ percent of my estate free of all duties for the general purposes of Lifehouse Australia Trust ABN 70 388 962 804 of registered office Level 5, 119-143 Missenden Road, Camperdown, New South Wales 2050 and declare that the receipt of the Treasurer or other authorised officer shall be sufficient discharge for my executor.

You may choose to give a portion of the residue, or balance, of your estate after family, loved ones and expenses have been provided for.

I give, devise and bequeath _______ percentage of the residue of my estate free of all duties for the general purposes of Lifehouse Australia Trust ABN 70 388 962 804 of registered office Level 5, 119-143 Missenden Road, Camperdown, New South Wales 2050 and declare that the receipt of the Treasurer or other authorised officer shall be sufficient discharge for my executor.

A gift of a specific item of value such as property, shares, jewellery or works of art, may be specifically named in your Will and bequeathed directly to The Chris O’Brien Lifehouse. The appropriate wording in these instances is:

I give, devise and bequeath [specify sufficient details of the gift being bequeathed, such as all my shares Telstra Corporation Limited or my principal place of residence in which I am living immediately prior to my death] free of all duties to Lifehouse Australia Trust ABN 70 388 962 804 of registered office Level 5,119-143 Missenden Road, Camperdown, New South Wales 2050, for its general purposes and declare that the receipt of the Treasurer of other authorised officer shall be sufficient discharge for my executor.

I give, devise and bequeath [percentage of estate/specific gift, etc] free of all duties to Lifehouse Australia Trust ABN 70 388 962 804 of registered office Level 5, 119-143 Missenden Road, Camperdown, New South Wales 2050 to use towards [e.g.research in the area of colorectal cancer]and declare that the receipt of the Treasurer of other authorised officer shall be sufficient discharge for my executor.

Chris O’Brien Lifehouse bequestors thoughtfully plan for a future without cancer by leaving Lifehouse a gift in their Will.

As an independent not-for-profit comprehensive cancer centre Lifehouse is greatly appreciative of the philanthropic support we receive. Bequests make a significant contribution to helping us treat the 50,000 patients we see each year at Lifehouse.

However, why not talk to Lifehouse about leaving part of your bequest right now.

A Living Bequest is a tax-deductible gift which is brought forward by a bequestor to support our present day work.

Instead of imagining the good that your estate will bring, your Living Bequest will give you the opportunity to see firsthand the impact of your legacy and meet the people you are so generously supporting.

You have spent a lifetime working hard to build and carefully craft your estate.  Get the most out of it through a Living Bequest.  Don’t just imagine but experience the good you can do.
